  Yaten's Love Life

Image: Yaten and Minako.Okay, let me be honest about this: I always have been, and always will be, a fan of a romance between Yaten and Minako. They are my absolute favorite pairing in the entire series, hands down.

THE Yaten and Minako episode is episode 192 ("Going for the Dream! The Idol Minako is Born?!"). Minako is accepted for the final rounds of a talent audition, but is reluctant to participate in it. She is too preoccupied with worries about Sailor Galaxia and the Animamates. Usagi, Ami, and Makoto convince her to go anyway. "It's because of this (Galaxia and the Animamates) that I want you to go," Usagi says. "No matter what, you shouldn't forget your dreams. Dreams, love, friendship, hope... Because we have a lot of things that we want to protect, we can fight together." So Minako goes to the audition, only to find a surprise waiting for her. Yaten Kou, in one of his typical publicity stunts, is one of the judges of the audition.

When Yaten spots Minako, he's furious. He confronts her backstage and slams her into a wall. "What are you doing? Do you know what kind of situation you're in? Don't you care about your planet?!" he yells at her.

"This is my dream," Minako replies.

"Is your dream more important than your duty as a Sailor Senshi?" asks Yaten.

Minako goes through the audition regardless, inspired by Usagi's words. After the audition is finished, Yaten asks her again why she was trying so hard during the audition. "I want to answer to everyone's feelings. Usagi told me to give it my best. My dreams are everyone's dreams. Everyone's dreams are my dreams," Minako answers.

Yaten suddenly becomes unsure of himself. "Maybe we have lost our composure," he muses. "Our Princess is so close, but she doesn't appear. I don't understand what we are missing."

"You're not missing anything!" Minako exclaims. "You're shining brighter than anyone." Her words manage to cheer up Yaten considerably.

At the end of the episode, Usagi asks Minako how the audition went. "It will be Yaten's fault if I don't win," Minako jokes.

"I judged harshly," Yaten tells her, "But your star shone the most brilliantly."

A few days later, Minako receives a letter informing her that she won the audition. Satisfied that she has proven her talent, and can now become an idol any time that she wants to, Minako files away the letter. "Right now, it's more important to be with my friends," she remarks as the episode ends.

Another Yaten/Minako moment occurs at the very end of the season. Galaxia is about to kill the Sailor Starlights and take their star seeds. Sailor Venus jumps in front of Healer and sacrifices her star seed, and her life, to protect Healer. (And yes, that is Sailor Venus who jumps in front of Healer. I watched my fansubs several times over just to make sure.)

There are tons of cute little Yaten/Minako moments in the anime. Here are a few of my favorites:

Episode 178: Minako is jealous when Luna recounts all the "fun" she's had with Yaten. "A cat is all right... A cat can take a bath with him... enjoy his tickling... and more... I WANNA BE A CAT!" Minako wails.

Episode 183: The Three Lights and the Inner Senshi are camping. Usagi and Seiya are talking about a monster that may be stalking the campgrounds. Minako clutches Yaten's arm and whimpers, "Minako is scared! Minako is scared! Protect me, Yaten-kun!" Yaten doesn't actually comfort her, but he doesn't push her away! This is really saying something, considering Yaten's character at this point in the anime. In fact, Yaten doesn't even look annoyed.

Episode 184: The Three Lights and the Inner Senshi are playing cards. It is Minako's turn, and she refuses to discard any cards. Yaten points out that she does have cards that she could discard. "I'll discard if you'll go out on a date with me," Minako teases him. Yaten suddenly becomes flustered. "Discard those!" he yells as he lunges toward her and tries to grab the cards from her hand.

As earthshine writes, "Minako is someone who tries hard to see the good in people, even if they hide it," which is one of many reasons why Yaten and Minako would make a good couple. I think that there's a lot of chemistry between these two characters.

Once again, however, the same disclaimer that I made about Taiki has to apply to Yaten also. Yaten could probably never have a romantic relationship with anybody, much less an Earthling, without some sort of explicit permission from Princess Kakyuu. Yaten's heart is devoted first and foremost to Kakyuu, period (albeit probably not in a romantic sense). Judging from his reaction to Seiya's love for Usagi, Yaten is of the opinion that any stirrings of romantic thoughts for anybody constitutes some sort of betrayal to Kakyuu.
