Stars Manga Synopsis
Act 43, Volume 16 (original edition)
Act 50, Volume 11 (reprint edition)
The Sailor Senshi are happily immersed in high school life. But
all of that changes when Mamoru has to leave the country to attend
Harvard University in the States. Usagi accompanies Mamoru to the
airport to say her goodbyes... And becomes an eye-witness to his
death as Galaxia appears and rips the Golden Crystal right from his
body. Usagi faints into the arms of a not-so-hapless passer-by, one
Seiya Kou.
Usagi returns to school the next day, having convinced herself that Mamoru made it safely to America, ruthlessly supressing the memory of his death.
Later that evening, the Senshi attend a joint concert between Michiru and a new idol group, the Three Lights. The concert is interrupted by the appearance of Sailor Iron Mouse, who attacks the Sailor Senshi. The Senshi fight back, but Iron Mouse only absorbs their attacks. Finally, a strange voice cries out "Star Sensitive Inferno!" Sailor Iron Mouse is destroyed as light envelops her body.
Three strange-looking Sailor Senshi appear for just a moment, then dissappear again.
Act 44, Volume 16 (original edition)
Act 51, Volume 11 (reprint edition)
A cute little girl named Chibi-Chibi suddenly shows up at Usagi's house. At the same time, Usagi begins recieving mysterious postcards in the mail. None of them have anything written on them, but all feature beautiful images on the front. Usagi is convinced that they are from Mamoru, but she couldn't be more wrong...
Then we get to the really fun parts. The Three Lights transfer to Usagi's high school, and there are numerous scenes of them interacting with Usagi and her friends. Haruka and Michiru are very suspicious of the Three Lights, but Usagi and her friends seem to trust them.
Sailor Aluminum Seiren attacks the high school, and in a stunning scene that shocks the readers as much as it shocks Usagi, Seiren manages to kill Sailors Jupiter and Mercury.
Faced with no other choice, the Three Lights transform into the Sailor Starlights in front of the other Sailor Senshi, thus revealing their secret identities.
Fighter and Maker combine their attacks to destroy Aluminum Seiren.
And finally, after the dust has settled, the Starlights can give
themselves a proper introduction.
"The place where stars drift, holding three infinite lights - Sailor Starhealer! Sailor Starfighter! Sailor Starmaker! We are the Sailor Starlights!"
Act 45, Volume 16 (original edition)
Act 52, Volume 11 (reprint edition)
The Three Lights confront Usagi on the rooftop of Juuban High School. Haruka also enters the scene. Taiki holds out a tarot card that shows scenes from Mamoru's death in the airport. "Remember!" Seiya urges Usagi. "You have to hold on, or you'll lose this battle! Remember what happened to your Mamoru!"
When Usagi starts crying, Seiya pulls her close and kisses her.
Haruka is shocked to learn about Mamoru's death. "Prince?!" she thinks in disbelief.
Time passes. Usagi continues to recieve postcards in the mail, beautiful images with no messages written on them. Minako and Rei confront the Three Lights, asking them to prove that they are true Sailor Senshi. The Three Lights transform into the Sailor Starlights, and Maker gives a tarot card to Rei. "Sailor Mars... the card after Death," she says as the Starlights exit the scene.
Act 53, Volume 11 (reprint edition)
Sailor Mars and Sailor Venus return to the Hikawa Shrine, only to find Sailor Lead Crow waiting for them. Together with Sailor Moon, they are able to defeat Lead Crow... only to have Sailor Galaxia appear moments later, and kill both Mars and Venus.
Later, the Three Lights visit Usagi's house. Usagi finally accepts the fact that Mamoru and her friends are dead, and the Three Lights can explain to her about Sailor Galaxia, and the Sailor Crystals. Seiya says that their planet and their princess also fell prey to Galaxia. Finally, she hands Usagi a tarot card with a picture of the center of the galaxy on it. "Galaxia is in there," she says as she and her companions leave.
"The cards that I've been getting . . . They weren't from Mamo-chan. They were from Seiya-kun," Usagi realizes.
The next day at school, Usagi is befriended by a new transfer student named Suzu Nyanko. The Three Lights sneak away from school (naughty, naughty) and show up at Usagi's house. They confront Chibi-Chibi, and demand that she give them her incense burner that smells like fragrant olive blossoms. When Chibi-Chibi refuses, mists emerge from the incense burner that eventually take on the form of an exotic alien woman. "It's all right, Chibi-Chibi-chan. These people are my special friends," the woman says.
The Three Lights gasp. "Princess!"
Act 46, Volume 17 (original edition)
Act 54, Volume 11 (reprint edition)
Meanwhile, back at school, Luna and Artemis appear and confront Usagi's new friend, Suzu Nyanko. The girl reveals herself to be Sailor Tin Nynako, and she attacks the cats. Suddenly Diana appears in the midst of the fray, and all three of the cats are badly injured by Tin Nyanko's attacks. Then the Sailor Starlights and Chibi-Chibi enter the scene, and Fighter is able to defeat Tin Nyanko with her attack.
The Starlights take Usagi and the injured cats back to their
downtown condominuim, where Kakyuu is waiting for them. Kakyuu
explains more to Usagi about the Sailor Wars and the fact that
Galaxia is collecting Sailor Crystals.
Time passes, and eventually Seiya and Usagi are left alone together in the condominium. When Usagi once again starts to cry, Seiya kisses her and promises to protect her. Finally, Usagi insists on leaving with Chibi-Chibi.
"Even now, you are burdened with such heavy wings... We are of different stations in the universe," Seiya thinks as she watches Usagi leave. "It must be unrequited love, Seiya."
(Note: Earlier in this scene, Seiya mentions that Kakyuu had a lover who was killed by Sailor Galaxia. This is *very* different from the anime version, where it is implied that Seiya and Kakyuu may have feelings for each other.)
Act 47, Volume 17 (original edition)
Act 55, Volume 12 (reprint edition)
While passing through a park on the way home with with Chibi-Chibi, Usagi is attacked by Galaxia. But when Chibi-Chibi starts glaring at Galaxia, the woman vanishes. The Three Lights rush to Usagi's aid, but it appears as if Chibi-Chibi's mysterious power has already resolved the situation. And from this point onward, Chibi-Chibi begins to talk like a normal person.
Usagi learns that the Outer Senshi have traveled to their castles in outer space to monitor the situation with Galaxia. When she attempts to contact them, she discovers that they have all been attacked by Galaxia, and are all dead.
Her resolve hardened, Sailor Moon demands that Kakyuu and the Starlights lead her to Zero Star of Sagittarius, in the center of the galaxy, the place where Galaxia dwells.
Act 48, Volume 17 (original edition)
Act 56, Volume 12 (reprint edition)
Sailor Moon, Sailor Chibi-Chibi Moon, the Sailor Starlights, and
Princess Kakyuu sprout wings and travel through space to Zero Star
of Sagittarius. Once they arrive, they find that they have to cross
the River Lethe in order to reach Galaxia. A ferrywoman with a boat,
also named Lethe, offers to ferry them across the river.
Unfortunately, Lethe's boat sinks while they are only partly across
the water, and our heroines are dumped into the River
Lethe.
While underwater, Sailor Moon sees a vision of the three cats (who were left back on the Earth) being killed by a myterious woman. This woman is revealed to Sailor Lethe. Lethe then attempts to kill Sailor Moon, but it stopped at the last moment by her twin sister, Sailor Mnemosyne. Mnemosyne takes pity on Sailor Moon, and helps both her and Princess Kakyuu regain the memories that the waters of the River Lethe washed away.
But, sadly, just when it looks as though Mnemosyne's change of heart is going to save the day, things take a turn for the worse for the poor Sailor Starlights.
Sailor Moon, Princess Kakyuu, and Chibi-Chibi have recovered from the disorienting effects of the River Lethe. Unfortunately, the Sailor Starlights are still lying on the ground, unconscious.
Lethe and Mnemosyne encourage Sailor Moon to fight onward and end the war with Galaxia. Then two other women appear on pillars of sand behind Lethe and Mnemosyne.
"Useless fools," the women say as they attack from behind and kill Lethe and Mnemoysne. The two Senshi die holding each other's hands.
The two new Sailor Animamates next turn their attention to Sailor Moon. Silently and coldly, they attack her.
Chibi-Chibi jumps in front of Sailor Moon, holding up her little scepter and managing to shield Sailor Moon from the attack.
But . . .
Energy from the Animamate's attacks swirl around the Sailor Starlights, and their Sailor Crystals emerge from their bodies. Laughing, the two Animamates take the three Sailor Crystals and disappear.
Act 49, Volume 18 (original edition)
Act 57, Volume 12 (reprint edition)
Kakyuu runs toward the three bodies on the ground. "Healer! Maker!
Fighter!" she screams. It appears as if the bodies of the Sailor
Starlights are on fire.
Sailor Moon calls out Kakyuu's name and grabs her hand, restraining her.
"Let me go!" Kakyuu struggles against Sailor Moon's grip. "The Starlights! I have to save them! Put out that blue fire! Their bodies are--!"
But it's too late. The bodies of the Sailor Starlights have turned to ash.
"Healer! Maker! Fighter!" Kakyuu collapses into Usagi's embrace, sobbing. "Noooooooo!"
Death and Destiny
Gruesome, wasn't it?
And that's it for the Sailor Starlights in the manga. The only time that we ever see them again is later on in Volume 18, when Sailor Heavy Metal Papillion shows their graves to Princess Kakyuu. It's morbid, to say the least.
As for poor Princess Kakyuu... Kakyuu, Sailor Moon, and Chibi-Chibi will journey onward and eventually reach Galaxia's castle. They will almost be killed by Sailor Heavy Metal Papillion, but at the last minute Sailor Chibi-Moon and the Asteriod Senshi will appear to save them.
Finally, Kakyuu will face off against the two women that killed the Sailor Starlights. They are Sailor Phi and Chi, perhaps the most powerful servants of Sailor Galaxia. She demands that they return the Sailor Crystals of the Starlights. But do the villians *ever* listen? No, of course not.
Kakyuu transforms into Sailor Kakyuu, and is able to do some serious damage to the evil Animamates. But alas, it's not enough. It's never enough, is it? Sailor Chi plunges her staff straight through Kakyuu's body. The Princess of Kinmoku dies in Sailor Moon's arms.
