RULES.
Here are the rules and requirements for fanart entries, as posted originally on the contest entry page:
Your artwork must center around one or more of the Three Lights wearing an unsual costume. A "costume" can be a traditional Halloween costume, such as a vampire or a ghost, or something more creative, like cosplaying an anime/manga character, or anything in between. I'll accept bunny-girls, sexy nurses, Disney princesses, rubber dinosaur costumes, whatever.
The whole body of the character must be drawn. No headshots or busts, please! I want to see FEET!
You can draw the Three Lights as male or female.
You can include Princess Kakyuu and other Sailor Moon characters, although your picture MUST feature at least Seiya, or Taiki, or Yaten to qualify.
I will accept artwork of any medium, including black-and-white pencil sketches, ink drawings, watercolors, pastels, or computer-colored or computer-generated images. Sometimes a beautifully done black-and-white drawing can outshine ten more images colored with Photoshop; but on the other hand, I won't pretend that I (the judge) am not slightly biased toward pretty colors. I'm only human, you know. ^__^ At the time I cannot speak for the other judges, although most of us can spot talent when we see it, regardless of color or not.
Clarification 11/18/02: Your entry must be an original, hand-drawn work. You cannot take existing anime or manga artwork of the Starlights and edit/alter it to make it look like they're wearing costumes. Your artwork will also not be eligible for winning if you have obviously exactly copied a pose from an official piece of artwork, or from another artist's fanart or doujinshi.
Any entries that did not meet the above requirements were not eligible to win recognition as one of the top three entries, or as a judge's pick.
JUDGING.
Again, here's another pair of paragraphs originally posted on the contest entry page. These explain who the judges are and what criteria we used when picking the winners of this contest:
There are three judges. One is me, Kotetsu. The other two are Sawa Hikari (Red Ceres) and Meianou (Meianou.com).
Like in all fanart contests, we judge on subjective criteria. In the end, the "best" artwork wins. Uh-huh. However, there are some objective guidelines that we'll keep in mind: Does your artwork LOOK like one of the Three Lights? (Does that really look like Taiki, or does it look like any old girl with auburn hair and purple eyes?) Is there detail to the picture, or sophisticated touches like shading and shadows? Is the spacing/composition well done or sloppy? Is there emotion or humor in the picture, or is it just a girl posing with no expression on her face (or his face)? Is the idea behind the picture especially creative or unique? These are some of the things we'll keep in mind as we judge.
As you can tell, even weighing all those different factors, it was still a difficult decision to pick the winners. However, I hope that everyone agrees that we judges did our best, judged fairly, and in the end chose the best fanart to win.
