Olive Blossom
By
KoujoKakyuu
‘Poor
Seiya,’ thought Yaten sadly as she watched her from her window seat. Seiya was
sitting with her knees pulled up to her chest on the palace lawn looking
forlornly at a pair of birds building a nest in the shrubbery across from her.
Yaten did not often use her empathic powers to see what her friends were
thinking about because she knew that the others would consider it an invasion of
their privacy. However, the cloud of misery that was clinging to Seiya demanded
that she probe until she found out what was hurting her so terribly. She was
extremely surprised about what she discovered.
‘Kami-sama! Seiya does not believe that Kakyuu loves
her? How could that be? I thought that the princess and Seiya were very happy
together. The princess acts as though she feels very passionate about her. I
wonder how the princess actually feels,’ thought Yaten as she left Seiya as she
began to focus on Kakyuu, an individual whose mind she never read.
******************************
‘What’s wrong with me?’ Seiya asked herself as she
curled herself into an even tighter ball, ‘Why do I always fall in love with
people who don’t return my affection? But… if I’m correct and the princess does
not love me why did she pick me to be her royal consort in the first place? Why
would she decide that I was to be her fiancée if she only thinks of me as a
sister?’ Seiya stopped trying to find the answers to her endless string of
questions. Instead she tried to think of something else… Earth. She had long
since given up on ever having a chance with Usagi. She loved Mamoru and as
Neo-Queen Serenity and Prince Endymion they were destined to each other.
‘Do I have a destiny or does destiny only exist for
the Sol Senshi because of their reincarnation and time travel? If there is such
a thing as destiny then who am I destined to be with? Is there someone for me
or has fate turned its back on me?’ she wondered as her thoughts drifted back
to Kakyuu. She heaved a sigh and tried to forget her problems. As usual it
didn’t work so she just lowered her head to her knees and attempted to sort out
her thoughts.
******************************
As Yaten explored Kakyuu’s consciousness she became
more and more annoyed by Taiki who was being her usual boring self as she spoke
to the princess. All Kakyuu could think about was how to get rid of her without
hurting her feelings. She decided that it was the perfect moment to mention
that Ami had sent some textbooks that she thought Taiki would enjoy “perusing.”
Taiki took off like a shot just as she had anticipated. Kakyuu smiled and sat
down at her desk and began working on how to continue the campaign to restore
Kinmokusei.
******************************
After a while she looked
up and watched Seiya. Kakyuu felt a twinge of sorrow for her. Seiya had been
depressed all week, but anytime the princess asked her what was wrong she said
that she was “just tired.” Kakyuu knew there was something more than that, but
decided quite tactfully not to press the subject. She stood up and walked to
her room so she could think. Once she was there she took off her shoes,
stripped out of her many layers of cumbersome dress and placed the outfit
carefully in the closet. Then she removed her hat and slowly unpinned her hair,
allowing it to fall freely down to her ankles. She sat down at the vanity and
removed the make-up that she customarily wore in public. I looked in the mirror
she saw a reflection of Seiya’s crestfallen figure still seated near the pond.
Kakyuu’s emotions suddenly showed and tears began gathering in her scarlet
eyes. She ran to her bed and threw herself onto it in a very undignified
manner, her flaming red hair sweeping across her naked body as she began
weeping.
******************************************************************************************************************************
Yaten’s
eyes flew open at this sudden flash of violent emotion. She quickly calmed
herself and resumed her trance-like state to focus all of her attention on
Kakyuu. She carefully allowed Kakyuu’s thoughts and feelings to enter her mind.
Though she was just barely allowing Kakyuu’s thoughts to wash over her they
still hit her like an avalanche of deep and lonely pain. Hellish red and
hopeless blue formed the intricate pattern of pain and sadness that laced
Kakyuu’s subconscious. Yaten sifted through the princess’s coherent thoughts
and began to understand the reasons for her emotions.
******************************
‘Why?
Why must my heart be broken? I felt passion so very long ago, but my lover was
slain by Galaxia before my eyes. Seiya was there. She saw the agony in my eyes
and she comforted me. She consoled me and then I disappeared, leaving my Senshi
to scour the universe, searching for me, their songs echoing in vain, or so
they thought. I heard them though, never completely losing heart, always
believing that their efforts would be totally wasted. Their voices filled the
void in my heart, Seiya’s more often than the others’. Perhaps that’s why I
thought I loved her as something more than a friend, just because I knew that
she loved me as something more than that, but now I know that I’ll never find
love with Seiya. Maybe she senses my feelings, or more accurately my lack of
feelings, and that’s why she’s been so sad. I need to mask these thoughts and
emotions; I must enshroud them so Seiya does not pick up on them. I’m hurting
myself by forcing myself to love her, but I can’t stop, that would be like
plunging a knife into her heart, and I don’t want her blood to taint
everything. I need someone though. I need to love someone. I need someone to
love me and I need to be able to return that love freely. I can’t survive alone.’
******************************
Yaten slowly broke out of her trance. Then she left
the room.
******************************
‘Ami
sent some wonderful books,’ thought Taiki as she looked through them. She
picked up one titled “Psychoanalysis for the Extremely Gifted.” She decided to
analyze someone.
‘Kakyuu? No… I don’t know where she is. Yaten? No…
she has everyone else’s problems, not to mention her own. Well…. I guess that
leaves Seiya. She’s been down lately. I’ll figure out what’s wrong with her,
after all, there’s something wrong with everyone except me, I’m perfect,’
thought Taiki happily as she strode smugly out of the palace.
******************************
Seiya felt someone watching her. She lifted her head
and looked at Taiki who was staring thoughtfully at her, that was always scary.
What was even more frightening was that she suddenly began scribbling furiously
in a notebook. Seiya took the opportunity to slip away to an area with enough
vegetation to hide her from Taiki.
‘Hopefully this new phase won’t last too long,’
thought Seiya optimistically.
******************************
Yaten’s slippered feet made no noise on the cold
marble floor as she walked towards Kakyuu’s chambers. The door swung silently
on its hinges as Yaten opened it. She stole silently into the room, pulling the
door shut behind her. Her gaze traveled slowly around the room, lingering on
the vanity which was in complete disarray, and then locking onto a corridor lit
only by flickering candles perched precariously on candlesticks that branched
off the wall. She crept slowly through the passage and into a dimly lit room
where Kakyuu lay, a small figure unprotected except for the cascade of
cranberry hair that swept across her. Yaten stood completely still, captivated
by the sorrowful radiance that shone from Kakyuu’s pure aura. She broke out of
her daze as the princess began sobbing. She took a few steps forward and
reached out hesitantly for the princess as she knelt beside the bed. She softly
stroked the back of the crimson haired woman’s head. Kakyuu’s eyes flew open,
fear emanating from their ruby depths. She calmed when she saw Yaten’s electric
green eyes, but flinched as Yaten reached forward and gently wiped her tears
from her face. She closed her eyes and allowed Yaten’s fingers to dismiss the
pain reflected in the tears that streamed down her face. Then she felt Yaten’s
finger’s interlacing with her own. She sat up slowly as she felt Yaten seat
herself on the bed. Then she turned and collapsed in Yaten’s arms. Yaten methodically
rubbed her back as she gazed at the fragile olive blossom quivering in her
arms.
******************************
Seiya seated herself beneath a great olive tree
covered with fair yellow flowers. The light fragrance reminded Seiya of Kakyuu.
‘Everything reminds you of her right now baka!’ She
leaned back, gazing at the patches of azure sky scattered among the pale
blooms. Seiya’s eyes slipped shut as she lay blissfully thinking of what she
always strived to think of: nothing at all.
******************************
After ten minutes of writing Taiki looked up to find
that her subject had disappeared. She scanned the grounds frantically for
Seiya, but could not find her.
‘How rude! Well… maybe she didn’t realize that I was
studying her. *sigh* I guess three pages of observation is enough for now.’ She
thought as she climbed the steps to the front doors of the castle. She always
had to make a grand entrance to ensure that people knew she was there. In a way
it was helpful; they could run when they saw her approaching.
******************************
Kakyuu
felt safe and warm in Yaten’s arms… she felt… loved. As she rested her
tear-stained cheek against her chest she heard Yaten’s heart beating beneath
her breast. She wished she could stay like that forever, but she had to speak
to Yaten about Seiya.
******************************
Yaten
felt what the princess was feeling and she cupped her chin, gently causing her
to raise her head. Time slowed as they stared into each other’s souls. Kakyuu’s
eyes grew alarmed and she said softly, “I can’t. I’m engaged to--,” but Yaten
stopped her, placing a finger over her red lips. The princess’s eyes filled
with tears, “Don’t. Please. I can’t.” she whispered as she backed away from
Yaten. Then she ran to her outer chamber. She quickly slipped on a long simple
gown and bolted as she heard Yaten cry, “Wait Kakyuu-hime!” then more softly,
“Wait.”
******************************
The princess ran barefoot; fleeing from the person she
now realized she loved. She ran out the back door and through the garden,
collapsing under the ancient olive tree.
******************************
Seiya
heard someone fall onto the roots on the opposite side of the tree. She arose
and walked carefully around the tree. Her eyes came to rest on Kakyuu, her red
hair splayed across the pale yellow silk of her dress in rivulets of blood.
Seiya sat down next to her and carefully gathered her up in her arms.
******************************
‘Kami-sama,
I don’t need this. I can’t face her,’ thought Kakyuu as Seiya collected her
unruly hair and braided it. When she had finished she gently pulled Kakyuu to
her and held her.
“What’s
wrong Princess?” she asked. Kakyuu did not reply as she struggled to keep from
crying.
“Please
tell me,” said Seiya, and then when she received no reply she said softly, “You
can cry princess. Don’t hide your emotions.” Kakyuu attempted to speak, but
couldn’t, so she shut her eyes and allowed a few tears to trickle down her pale
face. She quickly wiped them away and waited for Seiya to speak, but she
didn’t. She simply gazed thoughtfully at the tree and the sky beyond it. After
a while she glanced down at Kakyuu and was surprised to discover that she had
fallen asleep. She seemed very small and completely exhausted. Seiya decided
not to wake her up; she seemed so tired. Instead she watched as darkness slowly
covered the grounds. Then she contemplated the princess sleeping peacefully in
her embrace. Finally, closer to dawn than dusk, she fell asleep herself.
******************************
A chirping bird pulled Kakyuu from her sleep. She
opened her eyes slowly and realized that she was outside. Then she remembered
Seiya who had her arms wrapped around her slender frame. She attempted to shift
position, but only managed to make Seiya pull her closer. Kakyuu was unsure of
what to do. She knew that it would hurt Yaten if she saw them, she didn’t want
to do that again, so she had to wake Seiya up, but how? Seiya was usually an
early riser, but she was dead to the world. Kakyuu carefully twisted around and
hesitantly whispered, “Ohayougozaimasu,” in Seiya’s ear. Seiya awoke and
blinked in the morning sunshine. Once she was able to focus she stared into
Kakyuu’s claret eyes. Kakyuu felt uncomfortable, remembering what had happened
the last time someone had done that. Then Seiya caught her completely off guard
by instructing her to look up at the sky and the tree. Kakyuu quickly obliged
for it meant that she could move to a less awkward position away from Seiya.
She stood and admired the blossoms and then waited for Seiya to explain why she
wanted her to see it.
******************************
“The yellow and the blue look pretty next to each
other, don’t they?” asked Seiya as she stood up next to the princess, after
Kakyuu nodded she continued, “But the yellow blooms look even more beautiful
next to the green leaves, ne?”
Kakyuu
abruptly stopped staring at the tree. She looked at Seiya, her deep red eyes
questioning.
“Princess, stop forcing yourself to be with someone
you don’t belong with.”
Kakyuu stared at Seiya, disbelief all over her face,
“But Seiya… you—I mean… I…you—” began an extremely mystified Kakyuu. Seiya
shook her head slowly, “Speak to Yaten about it.”
She had expected Kakyuu to dash across the grounds,
through the castle, and into Yaten’s room, but she didn’t. Instead she launched
herself at Seiya and covered her with kisses and tears of joy. Then she ran
into the palace to become the first person to ever convince Yaten that she was
a morning person.
******************************
Seiya understood the unspoken question that resonated
silently in the lime depths of Yaten’s eyes. She knew that she didn’t have to
speak to answer, ‘because I love her.’

P.S. I don’t really care
whether or not slippered is a word… I’m making it a word. It means that there’s
a pair of slippers on whatever noun it’s modifying.
P.P.S. I heard somewhere
that olive blossoms are yellow, but I’ve also heard that they’re white. I’m
going to believe that on Kinmokusei they are yellow. Besides I think that the
flower on Kakyuu’s head is an olive blossom… so for this poor story’s sake go
with the flow people!
P.P.P.S. Do you see why the colors are so important? Green represents Yaten, blue represents Seiya, and yellow & red represent Kakyuu. Does that make any sense whatsoever?
